I recently had a consultation and surgery for a blocked tear duct at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital by Adriana Kovacova and Richard Scawn. Their work is nothing short of excellent based on speed, medical skills and and actual operation and recovery. Their emotionally literate bedside manner helped enormously to ascertain the problem and raise my confidence, especially with Covid about. I have had many surgical procedures in the past and this was one of the best.

I was given the most efficient and caring service by this gentleman and his team. He is polite, gentle, personable and very good at his profession. I would have no hesitation to return to him if I have any further eye problems. He removed a cyst from my upper eyelid with the greatest of care and because I could not see very well with a patch over one eye he walked me out of the hospital to my waiting car.

I saw Mr. Richard Scawn 3 years ago with a suspected BCC on my left eye. After examination he explained in a detailed easy to understand way the treatment I would have to remove the lesion. His calm and positive approach gave me confidence in him and the procedure I would have. The removal of the BCC was followed by plastic surgery carried out by Mr. Scawn. The result was truly amazing my eyelid looks completely normal and can only be due to his great skill as a plastic surgeon. I am prone to BCC's on my face and I am so grateful that I will be cared for by Mr. Scawn and his team in the future. To say a thank you to him is inadequate really, but I do thank him sincerely.

I had a ptosis repair last year which didn't work. However it actually made it worse. I have since had it corrected by another surgeon, who said that the incision from Dr Scawn was made in the wrong place and in addition to that, he found an old stitch that had been left in my eyelid (for 9 months) which had been missed when Dr Scawn removed my stitches. I appreciate that not all ptosis surgery goes to plan however from getting a second and third opinion, it seems that the intital surgery should have been done differently, with a higher incision and better after care.

Response from Mr Richard Scawn

Thank you for taking the trouble to write. I am sorry your ptosis surgery did not meet your expectations. A small percentage of patients undergoing ptosis require revision and that forms part of our consent process. Many leading surgeons, myself included, use permanent stitches, which is why yours would have been left in post operation. Appreciate your feedback. Richard Scawn FRCOphth

Brilliant surgeon. He is thoughtful, knowledgeable, caring, concise, well connected professionally and has an excellent ‘bedside manner’. It is reassuring to know that he practises the latest techniques and procedures by attending international conferences.
